Navajo Rugs Buying Tips

One of the most notable points for trying to determine the authenticity of a Navajo rug is the manner in which it is woven. There are two different types of looms that account for differences in the weave.

Douglas Blue Feather

Native American Flutist

Known as a “master of the flute,” Douglas Blue Feather is an award winning songwriter, recording artist, and performer of contemporary and traditional Native American music. A two-time winner of the Native American Music Awards, Blue Feather has released five CDs. In his third CD, Arrival, Blue Feather created a spiritual meditation around the Native flute and it won him the 2002 Native American Music Award “Best Independent Recording of the Year.” Traditional expressions on the Native flute in his fourth CD, Ride the Lightning, earned him the 2003 “Flutist of the Year” Award. In his latest release, The Great Spirit of Christmas, Blue Feather teamed with internationally known keyboardist, Char-El, for a unique collection of Christmas classics.

A drummer since the age of 13, Blue Feather performs all of the drum and percussion instruments and some keyboards in his work. He has been featured on Fox TV several times and performed at powwows, festivals, and churches around the country. Recognized by Native Peoples Magazine as one of the top performers on the Native music scene, he has appeared with legendary Native American musicians Bill Miller, Brule, and Carlos Nakai.

"I'm honored that people refer to me as a master, but like any musical instrument, the flute is still teaching me. I've been playing the Native flute since 1997, shortly after starting to honor my own Cherokee heritage and beginning my journey on the Red Road (Native American spiritual path). My music has become much more than I dreamed and is more than just a musical journey, it's a spiritual journey as well. It really is a gift from the Creator."
